Product Characteristics

  • Sound Profile: Full and round sound.
  • Color: Yellow-orange.
  • Compatibility: Especially suited for Eudoxa and Chorda string lines.
  • Brand Alignment: Developed to meet the technical requirements of specific string lines; named after Pirastro violin and viola string brands.

Packaging Design

  • Assembly: Cake of rosin glued onto a soft cloth attached to a hard plastic grip.
  • Protection: Prevents fingers from exposure to rosin dust.
  • Application: Designed to make applying rosin easier.

Rosin Selection Guide

  • General Rules:
    • Violinists and violists: Harder, dryer rosin.
    • Cellists: Medium strong rosin.
    • Bassists: Softer rosin.
  • String Core Compatibility:
    • Steel strings: Easier played with hard, dry rosin.
    • Synthetic, gut, and gut wound strings: Use a softer rosin.
  • Climate Considerations:
    • Tropical climates: Hard rosin works best.
    • Cold climates: Soft rosin is suitable.
  • Performance Context: Experienced players often prefer softer rosin for studio work and harder rosin for concert halls.
  • Quality Impact: High quality rosin allows for bowing without scratchy sounds, particularly when applied in a thin layer.

Production & Origin

  • Extraction: Natural resin obtained from pine trees during fall; distillation produces turpentine oil and rosin.
  • Purification: Resin is heated to evaporate water and remove impure components; pure liquid resin is skimmed and cooled.
  • Color Indicators:
    • French and North American pure resin: Light yellow color.
    • German pure resin: Rather brown.
  • Manufacturing: Pure resin is heated with added oil and materials, then poured into molds to form the cake.
  • Historical Context: Rosin use evolved from using resin for waterproofing boats; applied to bow hair (originally dried sheep gut, later horsehair) to create sufficient grip to vibrate strings.
